If you've been shopping for inexpensive flights, you've probably seen Spirit Airlines show up among the hunt results with low tickets, but you might not know a lot about this bargain airline. Spirit Airlines is an ultra-low-cost airline (ULCC) with exceptionally inexpensive fares. Spirit frequently charges for services that other airlines provide for free. Fares Spirit Airlines only offers one fare class, and its fares are lower than those of established airlines. However, many of the products you might receive for free on an old airline may cost extra while flying with Spirit. Seat Selection Fees When book a Spirit flight, you can choose a premium seat for an extra fee. According to their website, choosing a seat costs between $1 and $750 for each leg of your trip. In August 2023, I looked up the fare of a September trip from Atlanta to Detroit. I observed that seat selection costs varied between $7 (middle seat, rear of the plane) to $52 (big seat, very front of the plane) per way. If you fail to choose a seat when booking, one will be given to you at no cost during check-in. If you do not reserve your tickets in advance, Spirit cannot ensure that you will be seated alongside somebody from the same party. Baggage Fees Spirit Airlines waives luggage charges for one private item, such as a purse, laptop bag, or small backpack weighing up to 18x14x8 inches (including handles and wheels). You may wish to use your tape measure to ensure that your bag is small enough. Most regular-sized "rollaboards" will be too large to qualify as a free personal item. On Spirit's website, wheelchairs, car seats, as well as strollers can occasionally be checked or carried onboard for complimentary. The amount you pay to check or carry on luggage is determined by its weight, destination, and travel dates. The best option is to book your flight using the Spirit Bag-O-Tron tool. Waiting until you get to the airport will almost certainly increase prices. Priority Boarding Expedited boarding ("Shortcut Boarding") is offered when you purchase a bundled fare (see below) or as an add-on at registration. I chose not to purchase a bundle because I already had a flight booked. By the end, I was asked to add priority boarding for $9.99 per person, for each trip. Change and Cancellation Fees Spirit Airlines provides various alternatives for changing or cancelling a reservation, including using your online account, live chat, messaging, or calling customer service. All modifications or cancellations to reservations made more than 60 days in advance are free. Spirit's change and cancellation policy applies to reservations made fewer than 60 days in advance. Spirit Saver's Club Spirit Airlines offers its lowest tickets with the Spirit Saver Club.
The membership prices are $69.95 for 12 months, $99.90 for 18 months, and $129.90 for a total of twenty-four months. One significant advantage of membership is that you may reserve up to 8 individuals at the member discount fare rate when you complete the booking. Other advantages of becoming a Saver's Club member include: ● Discounted baggage fees ● Discounted seat selection fees ● Discounted priority boarding ● Discounted shortcut security. ● And more! I compared a half dozen fares with and without Spirit Saver$ Club to determine if it was worthwhile to join, and I discovered that reductions ranged from 8 to 16%. I recommend evaluating both fares, as well as the perks of the Saver$ Club, to determine whether membership is right for you.
